Vocationally Related Qualifications

Vocationally related qualifications (VRQs) are qualifications that relate to a specific occupational area.  They are normally knowledge-based qualifications providing learners with the theoretical knowledge behind their chosen occupation.  As such, VRQs can be taken by learners hoping to enter a particular industry, or by learners already working within that industry.

Technical certificates are a type of VRQ that are based on the national occupational standards in a specific sector.  Technical certificates underpin the knowledge of the occupational standards and complement the competence-based National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) within that particular sector.  Technical certificates can be taken as stand alone qualifications or as part of an apprenticeship framework.
