John Hayes, Minister for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning, announced that Key Skills will be extended until 30 September 2012 for use in Apprenticeship frameworks.  This gives learners the flexibility to do either Functional Skills or Key Skills within Apprenticeships.

From September 2012 Functional Skills will fully replace Key Skills as a mandatory component of all Apprenticeship frameworks.

Some Sector Skills Councils and Standard Setting Bodies have already amended their Apprenticeship framework to allow either Key Skills or Functional Skills for framework completion. Centres that have apprentices taking Functional Skills qualifications are encouraged to check that approval has been given by the relevant Sector Skills Council or Standards Setting Body.
