The aim of the English standards is to encourage learners to demonstrate their speaking and listening, reading and writing skills in a range of contexts and for various purposes. They are essentially concerned with developing and recognising the ability of learners to apply and transfer skills in ways that are appropriate to their situation.
Functional Skills Standards
Functional Skills in English are assessed in Reading; Writing; Speaking, Listening and Communication all of which are assessed at Entry Level 1, 2, 3 and Level 1 and 2.
Assessments at Entry Level are available in the following three formats:
- On-screen (marked by EDI)
- Paper-based (marked by Centre, moderated by EDI)
- Contextualised paper-based (marked by Centre, moderated by EDI)
Assessments at Level 1 and Level 2 are available on-screen and paper-based. Both are marked by EDI.
All levels are available on demand for Centres approved by EDI to deliver Functional Skills. EDI requires 24 hours' notice for on-screen assessments, 12 calendar days' notice for paper-based assessments and 12 weeks notice for contextualised paper-based assessments.
For Speaking, Listening and Communication, Centres may use EDI's assessments, contextualise EDI's sample assessments or devise their own. Whether contextualising or devising their own, Centres must obtain approval from EDI before using them.
